PSHE

Intent

At Dinton C of E Primary School, the intent of our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum is to deliver an accessible curriculum that will maximise outcomes for all children, so that they know more, remember more and understand more.

We aim to support every child to become a healthy, independent and responsible member of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially. We aspire to give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We want them to develop a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

This will be done through giving children opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities. As a Church School, we ensure that our Christian values of Respect, Trust, Wisdom, Responsibility, Friendship and Truthfulness are intertwined through this curriculum so we can fulfil our vision: to encourage one another and build one another up.

Implementation

At Dinton Primary School, we use Jigsaw as the backbone of our PSHE curriculum but we also supplement this curriculum with our choice of worship themes and the texts that we select as part of our reading spine, plus additional enriching activities such as police visits and first aid workshops. The Jigsaw PSHE programme, which is aligned to the PSHE Association Programme of study for PSHE, in line with the National Curriculum. PSHE includes RSE and identifies links to British Values, Cultural Capital, SMSC and key skills into the curriculum. Children will have access to key knowledge, language and meaning in order to understand PSHE and to use across the wider curriculum. Whole school and class Collective Worships always make a link to PSHE, Dinton and British Values and SMSC.

Our PSHE provision complies with statutory guidance on the National Curriculum, drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

Across all classes, six topics are covered across the year:

  • Being me in my World covers a wide range of topics, including a sense of belonging, welcoming others and being part of a community - school, village, local area, national and global.
  • Celebrating Difference focuses in similarities and differences and teaches about diversity, such as disability, racism, power, friendships and conflict.  Children learn to accept everyone's right to 'difference'.  We also learn about the concept of bullying - what it is and what is isn't, including cyber and homophobic bullying.
  • Dreams and Goals encourages children to think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, what personal strengths are and how to overcome challenges. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment, success and they have the opportunity to share their aspirations and their dreams for the world.
  • Healthy Me covers physical health (eating, activity, rest & relaxation, drugs, alcohol, keeping safe) and also has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, empowering children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these.
  • Relationships has a wide focus looking at diverse topics such as families, friendships, pets & animals, love & loss. A vital part of this unit is about safeguarding and keeping children safe; this links to cyber safety and social networking, as well as attraction and assertiveness. Children will learn how to deal with conflict, their own strengths and self-esteem.  They will have the chance to explore roles and responsibilities in families and to learn about stereotypes.  All lessons are delivered in an age appropriate way.
  • Changing Me deals with changes of many types from growing from young to old, becoming a teenager, assertiveness, self-respect and safeguarding.  Self and body image, puberty, attraction and accepting change are diverse subjects for children to explore.  Life cycles and how babies are made and grow are treated sensitively and are designed  to meet children's needs.  All year groups learn about how people and bodies change.

Impact

Children develop the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in a climate of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others. They will apply their understanding of society to their everyday interactions, from the classroom to the wider community of which they are a part.

Children will know more and remember more about PSHE. Children will recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.  Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be at least in-line with national and behaviour will be at least good. The large majority of children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum.
